Harmony Club

Harmony Club will take place here at FUMC on Friday, November 12 from 9:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Due to funding cutbacks, this will be the last Harmony Club held here at FUMC. Eight other clubs are still being held on various dates. Volunteers are always welcome! Contact Barb Ott if you would like to help.

Harmony Club is an opportunity for adults who are suffering from Alzheimer’s, related dementia or social isolation to get together with their peers and enjoy a day away from home in a pleasant, safe environment. Harmony Club is staffed by a Lincoln Lutheran team member, at our church on the 4th Friday of the Month.

We need volunteer companions to spend the day with Harmony Club guests doing such things as reminiscing about the old days, working on simple craft projects, enjoying music, or simply spending time together. While these guests enjoy these activities and lunch, their regular caregiver can have some respite time.

Harmony Club meets from 9:30-3:30 and it is possible to share the hours with another volunteer if you are unable to be here all day.

Please call at 632-9829 for more information on how you can volunteer.

Two Who Made a Difference

In 1992 Betty Christensen’s husband Milo, 85, was having a decline in his health. It was felt he needed some outside activity to help stimulate his mind. In the meantime Betty heard of a ‘new’ group called Harmony Club, a Respite Service, located in some of Racine area churches. Lamplighter’s was started in 1992, now active for 18 years, providing respite to caregivers; guests a day out with peers once a month, where communication is active, lunches home made and delicious, take home crafts made and entertainment after lunch, with dancing, bingo and sing-alongs. A nurse is on duty provided by Lincoln Lutheran, and each guest has a volunteer buddy. Guests are a mix of early Alzheimer’s, post stroke, disabled, and some just plain lonely. Milo was our first guest to sign up, and no matter how confused his day was he never forgot how to play the piano. And Betty?...She became one of our volunteers. Not only has this benefited FUMC but our community as well. Volunteers are needed! Contact Barb Ott at 664-1785, if you would like to get more information regarding volunteering at Lamplighter’s Harmony Club.
